Photography by Bill Bytsura

Photographer Bill Bytsura set out to document the AIDS Activist movement beginning in 1988 through 1998. This book is a series of black and white portraits of AIDS Activists from around the world. Bytsura worked in Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Puerto Rico as well as many cities in the United States. Moved by the dedication and the struggle to understand and find a cure for AIDS by the group ACT UP, Bytsura set out to record the faces and names of AIDS activists. Well-known activists like Anne-Christine d'Adesky, Larry Kramer, Moises Agosto and Mona Bennett are featured in this book. The work from this project, "the AIDS activist project" is part of the Downtown New York Collection at Fales Library, which documents the arts and cultural scene from the 1970s-1990s.
