ABOUT THE ARTIST
In her most recent body of work, Japanese Chiyogami papers are the focus of artist Susan Fleming's pieces. These hand-silkscreened papers originate from designs used in woodblock prints popularized in the Edo period. They are based on the bright kimono textiles that were seen on the fashionable women in the larger cities, such as Kyoto, where the techniques for dying cloth were quite sophisticated. Today, these vibrant decorative papers are used by artists in very diverse ways. Fleming extracts small scenes from these papers to create earrings, necklaces, rings, bracelets, and belt buckles. All pieces are sterling silver and the paper is completely protected under a layer of waterproof resin. All of Susan Fleming's work is fabricated in her Jackson, Wyoming studio.
