Active since the late 1970s, Anish Kapoor is best
known for his investigations into color, scale, materiality, and the concept of the void. His sculptures,
installations, and public artworks test the phenomenology
of space and have historically been characterized
by intensely tactile or reflective materials—
including colored pigments, wax, fiberglass, polished
stainless steel, and PVC—that resist narrative
reading. This volume documents Memory—
Kapoor’s 2008 commission for the Deutsche
Guggenheim in Berlin. Conceived as a site-specific
intervention in galleries in the Deutsche Guggenheim and the Solomon R.
Guggenheim Museum, Memory prevents any complete viewing or experience.
Fabricated of Cor-Ten steel with industrial bolts exposed, the work tests the
boundaries between sculpture and painting. It is considered in this exhibition
catalogue through the lenses of philosophy and postcolonial and architectural
theory. In addition to color reproductions of the work itself, this volume includes
preparatory sketches, architectural renderings, and images of other works by
the artist.
